Complete Preservation Work of "Yamagoshi Amida"

They completed the preservation work of the hanging scroll named "Yamagoshi Amida or Yamagoe Amida ( Descent of Amitabha over the Mountain.)", which is designated the first class national treasure of Japan. Over a period of two years, the work carried out at Kyoto National Museum to remove stains and to prevent colors from peeling off under the greatest care. The work also brought us new findings. For example, it was said that the five color threads were attached to the both hands of Amitabha, but there was no evidence.
Yamagoshi Amida is a paint of color on silk at Kamakura peiod, 13th century. The motif of the scroll is one of the visualization of the typical Buddhist image of Jodo-shu, which is Amitabha descending over the hill to receive a soul of the dead accompanied by Kwannon Bodhisattva and Seishi Bodhisattva.
